Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct control centre operations
   • Access, interpret and apply compliance documentation and procedures for control centre operations, and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Identify shift requirements from the previous shift report and confirm shift operational plan with the supervisor
   • Communicate with all relevant personnel before commencement of operations
   • Conduct pre-start checks
2. Conduct control centre operations
   • Start-up equipment and close down completely or partially in the sequence necessary to avoid damage/spillage
   • Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during the work activity
   • Monitor and control plant processes to maintain shift plan and optimise coal stocks/quality and overburden removal
   • Maintain control systems security requirements
   • Monitor and act on warning devices
   • Control the operation of equipment and the use of materials to minimise wastage
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency.

   • Process written records and reporting requirements
   • Carry out shift handover procedures

   • Follow standards for safe and competent work practices
   • Maintain control systems security requirements
   • Control and monitor contractor access to mine and plant
   • Observe safety rules and regulations

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of control centre operations including:

applying diagnostic techniques and resolves operational problems

accessing, interpreting and applying technical information to production plans

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the control centre operations in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

coordinating with other sections, including emergency services, planning and maintenance departments

demonstrates completion of conducting control centre operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

starting up, controlling and closing down equipment and avoiding damage/spillage and minimising wastage

monitoring and controlling plant processes

maintaining schedules according to current environmental and climate conditions

completing shift control duties

maintaining written records

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting control centre operations through:

applying legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

risk assessment and management

emergency, disaster, safety and security requirements

site and equipment permit and access procedures

identifying site plant and systems configurations, alternative configurations, capacities and limitations

identifying environmental compliance requirements

identifying control centre monitoring and communication systems

using mine geological conditions and survey data and associated operating precautions
